ONALASKA — Paul L. Nelson, 69, of Onalaska passed away suddenly on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012.
He was born on Aug. 11, 1942, in La Crosse to Leslie and Mildred (Warner) Nelson. On Nov. 24, 1962, Paul was joined in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Janet S. Nelson.
As a young man, Paul worked on the Nuttleman’s farm in West Salem. Then he went to work for Pertzsch Construction in 1964 and later with Lunda Construction. Paul made a career out of building roads and highway bridges. He took pride in his work and always said he loved what he did. He retired at the age of 63, working his last 10 years for Brennan Marine.
Paul was a skilled craftsman, especially at woodworking. Later, after his children had grown he made his own workshop in the old barn and kept adding to it. If you stopped by “the farm” as his home became known as, you would usually find him in there working on some wood project either for a family member or friend.
He enjoyed his golf games, snowmobiling and small trips up North to his brother’s cabin and to visit old school friends. Paul kept busy in his retirement being a full-time fan and spectator to his grandchildrens’ sport activities. Paul always had time to lend an ear, a voice or a hand. He was never too busy and there was never a job too great that he could not accomplish.
Paul leaves behind his loving wife, Janet Nelson; daughters, Debra (Mark) Thompson and Lynnaus (Erik) Gilbertson; son, Paul Nelson Jr.; his treasured grandchildren (by age), Thomas Wolfe, Hayley Nelson, Heather Thompson, Nicole Thompson, Katelin Gilbertson, Leif Nelson, Todd Gilbertson and Jacob Nelson; his mother, Mildred Nelson; brother, Daniel Nelson; sister, Sherry Nelson; numerous nieces and nephews and many great friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his father, Leslie Nelson; mother-in-law, Edna Schafer; and father-in-law, Roy “Benny” Schafer.
A strong memory that will be carried is his bright smile and his cheery greeting every morning. The dream of life is fulfilled and completed. Thank you everyone that shared in my journey, it was my greatest pleasure.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska. The Rev. Jenny Arneson will officiate and burial will be in Onalaska City Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
